Churwell Primary School

Learn, Aspire, Achieve

Meet the Governors

The Governors of Churwell Primary bring expertise from all areas industry drawing on their knowledge and experience and from all corners of the wider community.  We volunteer our time and regularly meet at the school to not only support, but also challenge the headteacher whilst respecting the role as professional leader of the school.   The decisions made together effect school policies, targets and the direction of the school,  taking into consideration decisions that have been made as part of the Aspire partnership.  In effect this is the strategic management of the school, whilst acting as a ‘critical friend’.

Sarah O’Hagan – Chair of Governors, LEA Governor

I have been a governor since September 2012 and have one daughter who attended the school. I joined the governing body because my initial impressions of the school were so positive that I wanted to give my full support to its continuing development.

I work as an accountant and I feel that my professional background coupled with my enthusiasm for the school as a parent will enable me to make a valuable contribution to school life during my time as governor. I am really enjoying getting to know the pupils and teachers through my visits into school; it’s fabulous to see how keen the pupils are to share what they doing and how proud they are of their achievements.

Please approach me if you have any questions and I will do my very best to answer them or to find an answer for you.

Farah Shippam –Co- opted Governor - Vice Chair of Governors

I have been a member of the governing body since 2013 and have two children.  I have over 20 years of experience in IT, predominantly within the public sector and currently work in financial services. I chose to join the governing body to contribute and support the school from a parent perspective.   It has given me an appreciation of the hard work that the staff do to maintain high standards.

Steve Webber – Co-Opted Governor

My decision to join the governing body came after some volunteering work I took part in helping out at some of the excellent events run by the PTA.  Coming into the school during a ‘working day’ and seeing how it worked inspired me to get more involved.

Professionally I run an IT consultancy business which operates UK wide working extensively with colleges and universities along with large private sector organisations and leading sports venues.  I very much hope to use some of my experience in designing and delivering IT solutions to assist Churwell Primary get the very best from their use of technology.

I am currently the chairman for LEAP (which many may recognise as ‘Young Enterprise’) which supports schools and mentors their students in setting up a business for an academic year.  I believe that such practical skills are vital to a child’s success in later life – allowing them to ‘stand out’ from the crowd.

Antony Huggins - Co-Opted Governor

I have lived in Churwell for 18 years and am passionate about helping our community. I have a daughter, Harper currently at school and hopefully our twins will join her next year.
Professionally I run my own driving school, I have worked for large and small businesses and hope I can bring my experience to help make our school the best it can be.
I feel it is important that we give our children the best possible start and that together we should work hard to achieve this.

Lucinda Coy – Co-Opted Governor

My experience as a parent with childen at the school has been fantastic. I have found teachers and staff to be carring, welcoming and supportive which has made my life as a working parent so much easier.  My day job is running a division within a recruitment agency in Leeds, which gives me the skills  to support the school and ensure it continues  to be the great place of learning that it currently is.

Jenny Fernhead - Co-Opted Governor

I joined the governing body at Churwell in September 2020 and have two children at the school.   I work in finance for a Multi Academy Trust, and so have an appreciation of how finance and operations running well ensures that school staff and its pupils have the resources, environment and support they need to educate and learn effectively.  I joined the governing body to support the team at Churwell Primary to deliver the best possible outcomes for all children in the school.

Ian Milner - Co-Opted Governor

I recently changed jobs moving into the private sector as a Principle Security Domain Architect having worked for Leeds City Council for a number of years. I am responsible for the Information Security strategy alongside design and implementation of solutions which meet the needs of a diverse business. With this experience I hope to support the governing board and school. My daughter attends Churwell Primary and I would like to play a part in helping the school to continue to achieve its goals.

Joanna Nelson - Staff Governor

I have been a member of the office staff at Churwell since September 2019 and want to give more to the school, hence my decision to put myself forward as a Staff Governor.  Prior to working at Churwell Primary I worked in the Banking  and Finance sector for nearly 30 years, knowledge of which I hope to be able to bring to the Governing Body.

Outside of work, I am married with 3 children, aged 15, 12 & 8.  I am a volunteer leader within the Scout Association, both as a Cub Scout Leader, but also Bandmaster of the District Scout & Guide Band and I also help out with junior rugby at Cleckheaton RUFC.

Laura Brearley - Governor

I applied for the role of Governor as soon as the opportunity arose, because my first impressions of the school were so positive, and I am keen to give my support to maintain these high standards.

My career and expertise is within Adult and Child Safeguarding.

I will endeavour to use my professional skills and experiences to provide a valuable and positive contribution to the Governing Body, whilst supporting Churwell Primary School to continue to be a great place for our children to learn and develop.

Hayley Darrington - Parent Governor

I am a former student of Churwell Primary School and my daughter is due to start in reception in September 2022, so I am really keen to support the school; I am a maths teacher at a local secondary school so I have plenty of experience making decisions about teaching and learning within a school.

Vicky Broadhead - Parent Governor

My daughter is just transitioning to high school, so I’ve been involved with Churwell Primary for 7 years now and my son is just about to enter Year 1, so will be here another 6 years. I’m a Business Analyst with 20 years’ experience in IT and believe I can use my skills to help guide and support the governing body and the school in their continuous efforts to deliver the best environment and experiences to the children, I believe every child is different and deserves to be treated as such.
