STEAM Projects

Each year the children are given an opportunity to immerse themselves in a whole school STEAM project. This focuses on:

Science

Technology 

Engineering

Art

Maths 

The children have the opportunity to: investigate, discover, connect, create and reflect. 

I am a musician STEAM project 

In 2023/2024 we are focusing on music and links to the STEAM subjects. 

In Science the children worked on listening to different sounds made by instruments, focusing on how the sounds are made and how we hear them. We had visits from our Peripatetic music team and some Science Teachers from BBG Academy to help us to learn about the links between music and science.  

I am a musician - Maths focus 

We worked with Mrs Day on music and maths. We focused on shapes, reflection, ascending, descending, ratio, counting patterns and bar models to compose different pieces of music. The music composed was amazing and the children enjoyed using maths and music. In assembly the children learnt how to read time signatures and listened to adults play different instruments as the children conducted. Who knew there was so much maths in music! 

I am an artist STEAM project 

In 2022/2023 we focused on art and how this is linked to the other STEAM focus areas. For the full year the children worked on different elements of art: line, tone, colour, shape, form, space and value. This was led by the Arts Council and our Artist in Residence, Penny Rowe. 

I am an artist - Science focus 

The children worked on science and art and made links with both subjects. They explored art work and looked for the science that they could find. he children did a range of activities: leaf rubbing, using natural materials to create art, marbling, exploring polarity in when creating art, observing perception with early animation techniques and exploring an understanding perceived motion through animation. Mr O'Reilly also led some assemblies where the children looked and art and worked out some science techniques. 

Our Future World STEAM project 

We are working on a STEAM project about our future world. We have had solar panels fitted to school and our heating is generated by an air source heat pump. It means that our school is nearly carbon neutral. The children have worked on science, technology, engineering, art and maths focus days and weeks.

Art focus - the children thought about how they would like Churwell to be in the future and worked with Penny, our artist in residence. 

Science focus - the children learnt about different areas that would support a sustainable future. They gathered ideas and made banners for our 'Climate Awareness' parade. 

Engineering and Technology focus - the children worked on different areas of technology and engineering linked to our future word. They built future cities, made something out of a cardboard box, to encourage creativity, learnt about future roles and spoke to adults that work in this field. 

30th Birthday STEAM Project 

We planned a STEAM project around our school building being on this site for 30 years.

Science and Technology Focus

Staff from The DePuy Synthes Company worked with the children to explore the different materials that are used as part of their medical work. The children learnt about properties of metals, how they are engineered and used in medical science and the career pathways of the staff at the company. 

Technology and Engineering 

Daniel Camish, a Honda racing driver came to visit us. He used to attend Churwell and now races around the world. He talked to the children about racing and the technology and engineering that was involved in the industry. Dan also told the children about careers associated with racing driving and about having dreams and ambitions. He also told us what it was like to be a pupil at Churwell, 30 years ago! 

Arts 

Penny, a local artist, worked with each class to draw the outside of our school building. The children focused on the seven elements of art to draw the outside of their classroom and the space around it. 

Maths 

We worked with Sharon Day, a maths specialist and the children enjoyed an investigation day based on the number 30 and the year 1990. Sharon worked with each class and introduced a maths concept. The children then spent the day exploring numbers and looking for patterns.
