Churwell Primary School

Learn, Aspire, Achieve

Meet the Governors

The Governors of Churwell Primary bring expertise from all areas industry drawing on their knowledge and experience and from all corners of the wider community.  We volunteer our time and regularly meet at the school to not only support, but also challenge the headteacher whilst respecting the role as professional leader of the school.   The decisions made together effect school policies, targets and the direction of the school,  taking into consideration decisions that have been made as part of the Aspire partnership.  In effect this is the strategic management of the school, whilst acting as a ‘critical friend’.

Sarah O’Hagan – Chair of Governors, LEA Governor

I have been a governor since September 2012 and have one daughter who attended the school. I joined the governing body because my initial impressions of the school were so positive that I wanted to give my full support to its continuing development.

I work as an accountant and I feel that my professional background coupled with my enthusiasm for the school as a parent will enable me to make a valuable contribution to school life during my time as governor. I am really enjoying getting to know the pupils and teachers through my visits into school; it’s fabulous to see how keen the pupils are to share what they doing and how proud they are of their achievements.

Please approach me if you have any questions and I will do my very best to answer them or to find an answer for you.

Steve Webber – Vice Chair, Co-Opted Governor

My decision to join the governing body was influenced by my volunteering experience at several PTA events. Observing the school's operations during a typical workday inspired me to become more involved.

Professionally, I run an IT consultancy business that operates across the UK, working extensively with colleges, universities, large private sector organizations and leading sports venues. I hope to leverage my experience in designing and delivering IT solutions to help Churwell Primary maximize their use of technology.

Currently, I serve as the chairman for LEAP (formerly known in Leeds as 'Young Enterprise'), which supports schools and mentors students in setting up a business for an academic year. I believe that practical skills are crucial to a child's success in later life, enabling them them to stand out from the crowd.

Antony Huggins - Co-Opted Governor

I have lived in Churwell for 25 years and am deeply committed to supporting our community. As a parent, I have seen first-hand the impact of our local school, with my eldest having now moved on and my twins currently progressing through Key Stage 2.

Professionally, I am a civil servant with a diverse background, having worked in both large and small businesses, been self-employed, and actively contributed to the community as Race Director for the Morley 10K through my volunteering with Morley Running Club. I believe my experience equips me well to support our school in achieving its full potential.

I am passionate about ensuring that every child receives the best possible start in life, and I firmly believe that by working together, we can create an outstanding environment for their education and development.

Lucinda Coy – Co-Opted Governor

I joined the governing board at Churwell Primary Academy a number of years ago. Having children that attended the school I was keen to use my years of working in, and running a recruitment business to provide a valuable contribution to the governing board and assist the school in its continuous development. I am hugely invested in supporting Churwell Primary Academy achieve its goals and continue to be a great place for learning.

 Ian Milner - Co-Opted Governor

I recently changed jobs moving into the private sector as a Principle Security Domain Architect having worked for Leeds City Council for a number of years. I am responsible for the Information Security strategy alongside design and implementation of solutions which meet the needs of a diverse business. With this experience I hope to support the governing board and school. My daughter attends Churwell Primary and I would like to play a part in helping the school to continue to achieve its goals.

Joanna Nelson - Staff Governor - Non Teaching

I have been a member of the office staff at Churwell since September 2019 and wanted to give more to the school, hence my decision to become a Staff Governor.  Prior to working at Churwell Primary I worked in the Banking  and Finance sector for nearly 30 years, knowledge of which I hope to be able to bring to the Governing Body.

Outside of work, I am married with 3 children.  I am a volunteer leader within the Scout Association, both as a Cub Scout Leader, but also Bandmaster of the District Scout & Guide Band and I also help out with junior rugby at Cleckheaton RUFC.

Laura Brearley - Governor

I applied for the role of Governor as soon as the opportunity arose, because my first impressions of the school were so positive, and I am keen to give my support to maintain these high standards.

My career and expertise is within Adult and Child Safeguarding.

I will endeavour to use my professional skills and experiences to provide a valuable and positive contribution to the Governing Body, whilst supporting Churwell Primary School to continue to be a great place for our children to learn and develop.

Hayley Darrington - Parent Governor

I am a former student of Churwell Primary School and my daughter is due to start in reception in September 2022, so I am really keen to support the school; I am a maths teacher at a local secondary school so I have plenty of experience making decisions about teaching and learning within a school.

Claire Oakley - Teaching Staff Governor

I have worked as a teacher at Churwell Primary School since 2002 and am hugely invested in the journey of our school; especially as we enter a new and exciting chapter with RMAT. I look forward to continuing to work alongside our new colleagues at RMAT in our goal of school improvement, progression and providing the very best for the children of Churwell Primary Academy and the community we serve.
